Small Business Owners vs. Computer Security Risks

One of the hidden risks a small business owner faces is the danger of computer threats and security mishaps. Sometimes it's hard to be sure if you're secure or not, but there are ways to mitigate security risks.

Here are a few tips.

Use Strong Passwords

Choose unique passwords that would be hard to guess. While it’s easier to remember just one password, it’s not wise to use the same password for all of your accounts.

Always log out of your accounts after use and do not leave important windows open on your computer.

Regularly Backup Data

Make it a part of your routine to backup important information in a secure location. Should you experience a crash, you can avoid some major setbacks if you have kept an updated backup.

Keep systems and software updated.

Updated systems are not only more efficient but they are generally more secure. Software updates and patches are issued regularly to fix both operating issues and security flaws.

Install virus protection software to all computers. Software is always being updated to better defend against threats. If you aren’t sure which software to go with, ask an IT professional in your area what they may recommend.

Avoid Phishing Emails and Scams

Never open email attachments from senders that you are unfamiliar with. Be wary of spam and clickbait emails. Unwanted senders may try to trick you by pretending they’ve already been in contact with you. Be cautious of emails that have “RE:” in the subject line if you don’t remember the correspondence.

Educate and Moderate Your Employees

Make sure your employees understand the importance of security. Do not allow them to access threatening sites with their work computers, and do not give them unnecessary access to any sensitive files or information.

Only hire employees that you feel are trustworthy and have a solid background.
